Trailblazer Women Redefine Leadership

Updated: Aug 31

Okay, so real talk! When I think of power moves, I think of someone who’s totally mastered one thing and still has the guts to dive headfirst into something totally new. That’s exactly what Zimbabwean woman Kirsty Coventry is doing right now and I’m honestly so inspired.

You probably know her from her insane Olympic wins (like, seven medals kind of insane!). She put Zimbabwe on the global sports map and gave us all a reason to cheer not just once, but over and over again.

But what blows my mind is what she’s done after the swimming. First, she became Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation and now? She’s made history again. In 2025, Kirsty Coventry became the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and yep, she’s the first woman EVER and the first African to hold that position.

She’s not just representing Zimbabwe anymore, she’s repping the entire continent on the world stage. And she’s bringing fresh energy into global sports leadership, talking real talk about athlete mental health, equal opportunities and making sure young people have access to sports everywhere, not just in rich countries.

And here’s the truth: this is what happens when girls are given equal opportunities. When girls are supported, when they’re allowed to dream big and when their basic needs are met, they can do anything. Imagine how many future leaders are missing school today just because of period poverty...not having pads or proper sanitation. It’s 2025, and no girl should have to miss a single school day because of her period. Full stop.

Kirsty’s journey shows us that the potential is already there. We just need to unblock the path. Because if girls can attend school confidently every day, feel safe and be treated equally, there’s no limit to what we can do. Sports? Science? Leadership? The Olympics? You name it.

So, to all the girls scrolling through TikTok wondering if their dreams are too big...they’re not. And if anyone tells you to “stay in your lane,” just remember: Kirsty Coventry swam her lane, broke the wall and built a whole new pool.
