Championing Equity, One Sport at a Time

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to turn passion into purpose and sports into justice just look at Dr. Tina Sloan Green. A true pioneer, Dr. Green is the co-founder of the Black Women in Sport Foundation (BWSF) and the first African American head coach in the history of women’s lacrosse at a predominantly white institution. She coached at Temple University, leading her team to three national championships and helping change the face of women’s sports forever.
But her legacy goes beyond the wins. She saw how Black girls and women were often left out of athletic opportunities not because they lacked talent, but because of barriers built on race, gender and access. So she helped create space, mentoring girls and women to not just play but lead.
Through BWSF, Dr. Green has empowered countless young women to believe they belong in sports, in leadership and anywhere they set their minds. Her work reminds us that representation matters and that equity doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when someone fights for it.
And that brings me to something that’s still holding girls back today: period poverty.
Think about it: How many future athletes, coaches or changemakers are missing practice, school or confidence simply because they can’t afford basic menstrual supplies? How many are told to sit out of gym class or skip competitions because managing their period in public feels impossible?
It’s heartbreaking and it’s also a justice issue. Because every girl, no matter her race, background or country, deserves the right to show up fully on the field, in the classroom or anywhere else she dares to dream. Dr. Green’s life shows us what happens when we invest in girls. When we give them tools, visibility and a voice, they shine.
Let’s keep that momentum going. Let’s make sure every girl, everywhere, has access to the dignity and support she needs including safe, affordable period products.
That’s how we build the next generation of champions.
That’s how we break barriers.
That’s how we honor legends like Dr. Tina Sloan Green.
